

The book of Ruth starts then, in the days of the judges, and in a time of famine. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there.

And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. Ruth 1:1-2 Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land.

Ruth is an amazing book! It's an incredible story of commitment and dedication, trials and testing, deliverance and freedom. Only let me whisper this in your ear, 'What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?' Count you the cost, and if you're not willing to bear Christ's cross, go away to your farm and to your merchandise, and make the most of them. 'Doth that man love his Lord who would be willing to see Jesus wearing a crown of thorns, while for himself he craves a chaplet of laurel? Shall Jesus ascend to his throne by the cross, and do we expect to be carried there on the shoulders of applauding crowds? Be not so vain in your imagination.
